{"id":116,"date":"2019-10-30T14:26:33","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T18:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/?p=116"},"modified":"2019-11-19T15:21:17","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T19:21:17","slug":"red-house-arima-dial-in-final-stages-of-becoming-heritage-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/red-house-arima-dial-in-final-stages-of-becoming-heritage-sites\/","title":{"rendered":"Red House, Arima Dial in final stages of becoming heritage sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-117 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/redhouse.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/redhouse.png 1017w, https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/redhouse-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/redhouse-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well-known landmarks such as the Red House, Arima Dial, Knolly\u2019s Tunnel, and others have been recommended to be added to the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago&#8217;s list of protected heritage sites and are in the final stages.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret McDowall, Chairman of the National Trust, said at a media briefing on Wednesday that this historic moment is a positive step in preserving the country\u2019s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis\u00a0recognises heritage properties and will allow citizens and visitors to celebrate them and\u2026protect these valuable assets,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said initially 62 sites were recommended but so far, 30 have been recommended to be listed as Heritage Sites. Once listed, in accordance with the National Trust Act, the property is deemed a heritage property and is entitled to legal protection.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was an arduous (task)\u2026I want to applaud the staff of the National Trust\u2026a lot of us worked hard to ensure we could get this going.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_118\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118\" style=\"width: 702px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-118 \" src=\"https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/knollytunnel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/knollytunnel.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/knollytunnel-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citizensforconservationtt.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/knollytunnel-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo: Knolly&#8217;s Tunnel, via the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some of the recommended properties include San Fernando Railway Station, Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve, Knollys Tunnel, Old Police Headquarters, the Arima Dial, Shiva Mandir (Gasparillo), and the Red House.<\/p>\n<p>Of special note is the Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust which is the world\u2019s second oldest wildfowl trust.<\/p>\n<p>McDowall said the listing process is set out under the Act, and includes recording details for properties of interest.<\/p>\n<p>The first process included nominations which can be done by both staff and citizens.<\/p>\n<p>McDowall said most of these recommendations were suggested by citizens and urged the public to continue to submit their recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>She said the Listing process is in the final stages and soon these properties will be protected by law as per the National Trust Act.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A list of the recommended Heritage Site properties are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>58 Piccadilly Street, Port of Spain \u2013 Grade 2<\/li>\n<li>All Saints&#8217; Anglican Church \u2013 Grade 2<\/li>\n<li>Arima Dial \u2013 Grade A<\/li>\n<li>Boissiere House \u2013 Grade 2<\/li>\n<li>Briarend (Audrey Jeffers House) Grade 2<\/li>\n<li>Conquerabia Grade D<\/li>\n<li>Exchange Village Shiv Mandir \u2013 Grade 1<\/li>\n<li>Holy Trinity Cathedral &#8211; Grade 1<\/li>\n<li>Knollys Tunnel \u2013 Grade A<\/li>\n<li>Laventille Water Trough \u2013 Grade A<\/li>\n<li>Main Ridge Forest Reserve \u2013 Grade C<\/li>\n<li>Nelson Island \u2013 Grade B<\/li>\n<li>Old Fire Station Building (POS) \u2013 Grade 3<\/li>\n<li>Old Police Headquarters (POS) \u2013 Grade 3<\/li>\n<li>Old Public Library (POS)- Grade 3<\/li>\n<li>Petroglyphs, (Caurita Stone)n \u2013 Grade A<\/li>\n<li>Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church \u2013 Grade 2<\/li>\n<li>Sangre Grande Old Post Office \u2013 Grade 2<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Morton Dormitory \u2013 Grade 3<\/li>\n<li>Shiva Mandir, (Gasparillo) Grade 1<\/li>\n<li>St. Francis of Assisi R.C.
